Welcome to Fafla Mikroværksted
Hello, welcome, have you been here before or ever painted ceramics?
Once you are ready, you can take a look at our selection of bisque. The bisque, glazing and firing is all included in the price you see.
When you’ve chosen what you would like to paint on, let us know and we will bring it out for you. And then we will come to you table and give a short introduction on do’s and don’ts
How to intro
To start, we recommend that you wet the sponge in the bowl and wring it out, so it is damp. Then wipe off the bisque to get the dust off, for more even layers of colors and glaze.
Once you are ready to paint, you take your tile and fill it up at the trolley, start with one or two colors, and preferably take a little to little than a little too much, because you can always take more.
When choosing the colors it is important to be aware of the numbers and letters, because the colors change a lot once they are fired. On all our color test-tiles the colors are painted on in three layers, for an optimal outcome. The paint dries to be matte and very light.
When layering colors, wait for the paint to turn mat before laying the next round. It’s your choice if you use 1, 2 or 3 layers. 1 layer gives light color with lots of brushstrokes, 3 layers give optimal coverage, evenness and color depth. 2 layers are somewhere in between. Once mat the paint is dry enough for you to hold the item.
We will glaze your items before firing them so you don’t have to cover up the whole item with color. Everything left white will get a glossy off-white look.
You can rinse your brushes in the jar, remember to dry them off on the rag, so that you don’t dilute the color. Lay used brushes on the table, after rinsing.
You will find an ordinary pencil among the brushes. You can use it for lightly sketching a text or motive. It will burn off in the kiln.
On the trolleys you will find some broken bisque for testing tools and techniques. You will also find banding wheels in different heights.
For inspiration take a look on our Technique wall. You´ll find it behind the coffee machines. You are welcome to use the tools there and get inspired by the ceramics and our technique pages that hang on the wall. They are in Danish, but you can scan the QR code and view a video about it. Is there one of them you want to try out, we´ll be glad to help.
When you have finished painting, we would ask you to sign your creation with a name, initials or some kind of a mark. You can do that underneath your thing. Then we know it is yours.
As the colors don’t stain furniture or cloth you can just relax and paint.
Don’t hesitate to ask if you need help, tools or colors.
About the colors
- The SC (Stroke & Coat wonderglaze) and the SP (Stroke & Coat, speckled) colors are our basic colors. They are highly pigmented and become opaque and give optimal coverage after 3 layers. They can cover the underlying colores.
- The SC colors also come in Detail bottles, they are good for writing, drawing and dotting. When using detail bottles one stroke is enough.
- The HSS (Fairy Dust) colors have glitter in them. Those with the blue lid. They are translucent so you will always see what is underneath op through your layers.
- The FN (Foundations Sheer) Are very lightly pigmented, which results in a highly translucent color with a very pastelly look and feel. They work well as base color and make a nice even finish, already with one layer. They are fast drying and can very well stand on their own but can NOT cover other colors up.
- SG colores are a clear glaze with speckles in them. Don’t mind the mint green color, it fires totally clear.
The color gets a bit thick when it has been standing for a while so it is always a good idea to shake the bottles. Some even have grain in them that falls to the bottom so shake shake.
